Investing in the future
XL Group plc has made major commitments to education and
training initiatives in three of the communities in which
its offices are located and has begun to branch out to provide
support for educational projects globally. In London and Zurich,
charitable donations to support local educational programs
were made to mark the opening of our new office buildings.
At XL corporate headquarters in Bermuda, the company has pioneered
a very successful educational project focused on information
technology, provides several scholarships and support for
other education initiatives.

London
Community education initiative
When our London office on Gracechurch Street was opened
in September, 2004, the occasion was marked by a contribution
to Community Links, an East London charity that provided
help to 10 and 11 year-old children whose educational
futures are at risk due to behavioral and other difficulties,
such as poverty, crime and abuse.
In London, we have also become a member of The Heart
of the City Program, joining other banks, law firms
and insurers in collaborating on philanthropic support
in and around the City. The London office is also a
member of the Lloyd’s Community Programme, where
our employees volunteer their time in the community.

Zurich
Career education program
XL Insurance Switzerland (XLIS) funded a career education
program in Zurich, as a gift to the city when it moved
there in January 2004. The program prepares young adults
for professional life, offering them training and counseling.
Begun in 2003 as a very successful pilot project, the
program is run by the Careers Guidance Office of the
City of Zurich’s Vocational Information Center.
XL has also supported the International Students Committee
Symposium in Zurich, the University of St. Gallen and
other local initiatives.

Bermuda
Integrating IT into the public school system
The Bermuda Technology Education Collaborative (B.TEC)
grew out of the XL Education Initiative that began in
1998. Its purpose is to empower students for the workplace
by providing access to a world-class technology curriculum.
Since 2000, almost 3,000 students in Bermuda have taken
the B.TEC technology courses.
Building on the B.TEC initiative’s success, the
International Education Collaborative Foundation (IECF)
has been established in the US to take B.TEC’s
technology-based education model to other parts of the
world.
In 2003 the US Department of Education’s National
Educational Technology Standards (NETS) awarded the
first International Standard for Technology Education
(ISTE), seal of alignment for the ICEF/B.TEC curricula.
